About HGSA

The History Graduate Student Association is an organization representing all History graduate students at Harvard. By virtue of being a History grad student, you are a member of the HGSA! Every year we elect representatives to form the HGSA Committee, which serves the interests of graduate students.

HGSA’s primary purpose is to improve the quality of life and strengthen the community of History graduate students at Harvard. It’s both a social organization and advocacy group for grad students in History. It also serves as an liaison between students and the Department, to raise student concerns as well as provide information and resources to grad students. Every month we hold an open meeting for all grad students to decide on events of interest to organize and discuss common concerns –  teaching allocation and best practices, professional development and training, health care, among others. Every semester the Executive Committee meets with the Department administration to discuss these issues of concern. At least once a year we also conduct a student survey to gather a wider range of opinions on these issues. All grad students are encouraged to become involved — whether by attending events, discussing your experiences with your reps, or running for an elected position.

To get a sense of the main issues we’ve been working on, check out our annual report.
